Mechanic giant
When we are looking at the modern Atlas robots, we are forgetting that the origin of those devices is in the Soviet Union. That robot suit was actually the tank, or all-terrain vehicle, where the person would sit in the robot and uses the joystick and pedal for operating that thing. In fact, I don't know how the interface of the robot would work, but it might be as simple as possible. So I think it works as I will write in the next chapter.
Manipulators would be operated by joystick, and pedals will operate the legs. Actually in that device was probably two joysticks, one for each hand type manipulator. And the pedals for each leg, which allows to operate them independently. Sometimes is claimed that in those vehicles were weapons like machine guns and EMP-weapons in the hand, and when the operator would want to use those weapons, must that person push the button, and if the manipulators wanted to use as hands, that operator might use the triggers, to move the fingers. Today those devices might have a hybrid controlling system, and it might use data gloves, virtual reality, and even the EEG to control those devices.
In the 1990s the problem was that the computers have no calculating power. When the operator wants to use this device in hard terrain would the button push for that mode, what will control the movement trajectories of hands and legs. In the modern versions would be more advanced computer technology. That allows using more sophisticated control systems. And those systems would operate also independently.
What means that artificial intelligence can notice if the vehicle must step higher and if there are things like walls, where must be climbed. And the computer chooses the movement style. When we are thinking about the abilities of those vehicles they might be very suitable in the rescue operations, where the big size grab must be removed very fast. The size of those robots could be very big, and they can be as tall as the house. The dimensions are making this kind of thing work as the human, but in theory, this mechanic giant could be even over 100 meters tall, and in the wildest scenarios it can assemble the space rockets or high buildings.
