That the creatures, what are living in some other dimension could use those crystals as the place, where they can make contact. But that kind of story is meant to keep that merchandise safe. If the targeted person would throw that thing away, there is no effect on that thing to the right persons. 

As you see the purpose of those stories could be to make people keep very good care about those crystals. There is a possibility that those crystals were planned to put on the metal plate, and then the radio transmission would send with the same frequency, what those crystals would receive, and that thing would make it possible to brainwash people. The only thing that is needed is the bite of the crystal, which is used in magic crystal, and then that bite would put in the oscillation circuit of the radio transmitter.
