The crystal skulls are not only magic crystals in the world, and sometimes I have thought that those fascinating things might be only the decoys. And the real magic crystals might be somewhere, in the location, what the only the highest priests of Mayan knew. But there is also the possibility that the crystals are made by some occultists, who lived in modern times. And the purpose of those crystals could be acting as "radio" between the dead and living people. 

Sometimes there has been introduced an idea, what is from the Indiana Jones movie. That the creatures, what are living in some other dimension could use those crystals as the place, where they can make contact. But that kind of story is meant to keep that merchandise safe. If the targeted person would throw that thing away, there is no effect on that thing to the right persons. 

As you see the purpose of those stories could be to make people keep very good care about those crystals. There is a possibility that those crystals were planned to put on the metal plate, and then the radio transmission would send with the same frequency, what those crystals would receive, and that thing would make it possible to brainwash people. The only thing that is needed is the bite of the crystal, which is used in magic crystal, and then that bite would put in the oscillation circuit of the radio transmitter.
