This is a big step for SETI-program
NASA is starting to fund a Harvard University project to hunt for the technical civilizations. And this thing tells that the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is taken more seriously. The new exoplanet observations are increasing the pressure and hope to search for the extraterrestrial technically advanced civilizations. The search contains two main roads.
-----------------------------------------------------
Two ways to search the alien civilization
1) Attempt to find the radio signals from other solar systems. The ideal version of that kind of contact is to find the synthetic frequencies, which can be identified by causing artificial transmission. Another version is just searched the alpha-emission of the hydrogen, and hope that the alien would follow that frequency.
The idea is that because hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, also aliens would listen to it. And the idea is to use that frequency as the call-channel.
But there is a problem with that kind of attempt. And that is that alien must separate the message, what is sent from the radio telescopes by human researchers. So there is the possibility, that aliens would not detect the signal, because of the background radio noise. And here the question is should we attempt to make contact actively. That means active radio transmissions to the stars, where the suspected alien civilization is living. Or should we just listen?
2) Attempt to find the "fingerprints" of the technical civilization. Those things are pollution and some other chemical changes in the environment, which would be suitable for alien lifeform, which is similar to us.
But the problem is finding a suitable planet is difficult, and there is a possibility, that the aliens would not use the combustion engines anymore. So the thing is that this kind of search would take an extremely long time because the telescopes should observe the area near every known star.
------------------------------------------------------
If we make contact with aliens, we don't know a thing about those species
And then we must realize one thing. Facing alien civilization would be at the same time fascinating and frightening experience. The thing is that aliens would not be like humans. They might look like humans, but they are formed on a different planet. And that thing makes this kind of contact dangerous.
The culture of the aliens might be different, what we have, and that means that this kind of thing is making the SETI-program so interesting. Everybody wants to see aliens, but the thing is that at that moment we would see that we are only one civilization with other civilizations. But would that thing revolutionize the society of the human race? Maybe we would turn to unite and the wars will be ended, but the thing is that this kind of thing is pure hypothesis, until we are making the first contact with alien civilizations.
